What to check before choosing a chartered accountant
A search result and a professional qualification answer different questions. Distance tells you where a practice is; a professional record helps you verify who it is and which body oversees it. Use the ICAEW firm link below to check Accotax London Ltd rather than relying on logos or the wording of an advertisement.
Ask who prepares the work, who reviews it and who handles questions after the accounts are filed. The firm’s professional standing does not mean every member of the team holds every qualification. Our established team includes ICAEW, ACCA and AAT members; check the individual’s stated credentials when a particular engagement requires them.
Chartered accountant or tax adviser: choose for the work
A company year end needs accounting, tax adjustments and filing responsibilities to fit together. A tax question may instead concern rental income, capital gains, a personal return or an HMRC letter. Describe the decision or document first so the consultation identifies the right service rather than assuming every problem needs a full company package.
A qualification is not a promise of a tax saving or proof that a practice offers a statutory audit, investment advice or legal services. Specialist matters should be accepted only after the relevant capability and scope have been confirmed. We quote technical projects separately from routine compliance.
Local access without a postcode-only decision
Our published Morden office is at 12 London Road, London SM4 5BQ. South London clients can arrange an appointment; others can share records and approve work online. We do not claim that this page identifies your nearest office or measures the distance from your device.
Compare response arrangements, record transfer, services and review responsibilities alongside location. If you prefer meetings, agree how they will take place and whether on-site visits are part of the fee. Being close by is useful, but a clear engagement remains essential.
What a written engagement should contain
Look for a list of accounts and returns, their periods, who maintains the records, when drafts are provided and who approves them. The proposal should identify bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, company-secretarial work and personal returns separately rather than calling everything accounting.
Government charges, taxes, historic catch-up work and technical advice need explicit treatment. The director remains responsible for accurate records and approving company accounts; appointing an accountant does not remove those legal responsibilities.
Prepare for a useful first conversation
Bring a summary of the business, the latest filed accounts, a list of registrations and approaching deadlines. Mention overdue returns, open HMRC correspondence and any work already assigned to another adviser. You can discuss the issue before sending confidential source documents.
We first identify the immediate obligations and the service needed. If you decide to appoint us, we agree authorisations, record access and responsibilities through onboarding. Do not send passwords or Companies House authentication codes in a public enquiry.
Comparing fees fairly
Published limited-company packages start at £45.83 plus VAT per month. Your turnover, chosen services and periods determine the applicable order or proposal. Personal returns, property work and technical advice have their own scope; the company starting fee is not a universal tax-advice price.
Compare quotes for the same periods and deliverables. A cheaper accounts-only fee may omit bookkeeping, VAT or personal returns, while a broader package may include work you do not need. Management reports, rolling forecasts, annual planning meetings and specialist relief work are not automatically Growth package inclusions.
