What HMRC reviews during a VAT check
HMRC may compare VAT returns with annual accounts, Corporation Tax figures, customs data, payment processors, bank activity and earlier returns. Officers can sample sales and purchases, inspect VAT invoices, test till or e-commerce systems and review whether business and private expenditure have been separated correctly.
The focus varies by business. Property, construction, hospitality, international services, online marketplaces and partly exempt activities all have distinct VAT risks. The response should explain the actual supply chain and contract terms, not rely on a generic VAT label.
