Best online accountant for UK limited companies: how to choose

Quick answer

The best online accountant for a UK limited company is one that is professionally regulated, publishes a fixed fee for a clearly defined scope, and handles accounts, Corporation Tax, Companies House and the director's tax return together. LimitedCompany.Accountants (Accotax London Limited, ICAEW-regulated) offers this online UK-wide, with monthly packages from £45.83 + VAT a month.

Updated 29 October 2026. We include ourselves in this guide, so we have kept to general criteria and our own published prices, and make no claims about other firms.

What should you look for?

1. Is the accountant regulated?

Anyone in the UK can call themselves an accountant. Choose a firm regulated by a professional body such as ICAEW, ACCA or AAT, so it must hold professional indemnity insurance, follow anti-money-laundering rules and answer to a complaints process. Check the firm on the body's public register rather than relying on a logo.

2. Is the fixed fee for a clearly defined scope?

A low headline price can exclude the confirmation statement, the director's Self Assessment, VAT returns or payroll. Ask for the full list of what is included and the price of anything outside it, in writing, before you sign.

3. Does it cover the whole compliance calendar?

A limited company has separate deadlines for Companies House accounts, Corporation Tax payment, the CT600, the confirmation statement and, for directors, Self Assessment. One firm handling them together reduces the risk of a missed date.

4. Will you get a named accountant?

Online should not mean anonymous. Ask who prepares your accounts, who reviews them, and how quickly emails and calls are answered.

5. Does it work with your software?

Most online firms work in cloud software such as Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent. Confirm which they support, who pays for the subscription, and whether bank feeds and receipt capture are set up for you.

How much does an online accountant for a limited company cost?

Our own published fixed fees, so you have a concrete reference point when comparing quotes:

Essential/Compliance package
From £45.83 + VAT a month: accounts, CT600, confirmation statement support and one director's Self Assessment
Core/Complete package
From £62.50 + VAT a month: adds bookkeeping, VAT returns and director payroll
Growth package
From £75.00 + VAT a month: adds payroll for up to five employees
One-off Year End Accounts and CT600
From £450.40 + VAT, based on turnover

We do not publish other firms' prices or market averages we cannot verify. Fixed fees in this market are usually set by turnover, transaction volume, VAT registration and payroll size, so compare quotes on the same scope, line by line. All our fees exclude VAT.

What questions should you ask before choosing?

  1. Is the firm regulated by ICAEW, ACCA or AAT, and can I check that on the public register?
  2. What exactly is included in the monthly fee, and what is charged as extra?
  3. Who will actually do my work, and how quickly do they reply?
  4. Which accounting software do you support, and who pays for the subscription?
  5. Do you handle the Companies House filings and the director's Self Assessment, or only the company accounts?
  6. Is technical tax advice included, or quoted separately?

Frequently asked questions

Is an online accountant as good as a local one?

It can be, if the firm is regulated, gives you a named contact and covers the full compliance calendar. Many online firms, including ours, also offer meetings by appointment.

What should a limited company accountant include for a fixed fee?

At minimum, the statutory accounts, the Corporation Tax return (CT600) and reminders for every deadline. Many packages also include the confirmation statement and the director's Self Assessment; check before you sign.

How do I check an accountant is regulated?

Search the firm or individual on the ICAEW, ACCA or AAT public registers. Our firm is listed on the ICAEW register as Accotax London Ltd.

Is technical tax advice included in a monthly package?

With us, basic tax questions by email are free. Technical advice, such as computations, disclosures or written planning, is paid and booked through accotax.co.uk/ws, with the fee agreed first.
