Crypto Tax Accountants for UK Investors and Traders

UK crypto tax accountants: Capital Gains Tax on disposals, share pooling, staking and mining income, DeFi, exchange reports and HMRC disclosures.

Short answer

In the UK, selling, swapping or spending crypto is usually a disposal for Capital Gains Tax, calculated using HMRC's pooling rules. Staking, mining and crypto received for work are usually income. We rebuild your transaction history, calculate gains and income correctly and report them through Self Assessment, or disclose past years to HMRC.

What this means for your company

HMRC treats cryptoassets as property, not currency. Every swap between tokens counts, not just cashing out to pounds, and exchanges now report user data to HMRC. Clean records and the right calculation method matter more than any single trade.

Capital gains on sales, swaps and spending

Section 104 pooling, same-day and 30-day rules

03

Staking, mining, airdrops and DeFi income

Voluntary disclosure of past years

What counts as a taxable disposal

Selling crypto for pounds, exchanging one token for another, using crypto to buy goods or services and giving it away (other than to a spouse or civil partner) are all disposals. Moving tokens between your own wallets is not, but the transfer fee may affect the calculation.

Gains above the annual exempt amount of £3,000 are taxed at 18% within the basic-rate band and 24% above it. Losses can be claimed against other gains if reported to HMRC within four years of the end of the tax year.

Rates, thresholds and dates reflect the UK position at the content update date. Check current GOV.UK guidance, or ask us, before relying on them.

Why HMRC's pooling rules change the answer

You cannot simply match a sale with the purchase you prefer. Tokens bought on the same day as a sale are matched first, then tokens bought in the following 30 days, then an average cost from the section 104 pool. Exchange 'profit' reports often ignore these rules, so we recalculate from raw transaction data.

Income from staking, mining and work

Tokens received from mining, staking rewards, some airdrops or as payment for work are usually taxed as income at their sterling value when received. That value then becomes the cost for a later Capital Gains Tax calculation. DeFi lending and liquidity pools need case-by-case analysis because the legal terms drive the tax result.

Exchange reporting and past mistakes

Under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework, UK-facing exchanges collect user and transaction data from 1 January 2026 and share it with HMRC. If earlier years were not reported, a voluntary disclosure normally leads to lower penalties than waiting for an HMRC letter. We prepare the calculations and handle the disclosure.

How we work

You give us read-only exports or API access for each exchange and wallet. We reconcile balances, identify missing cost data, apply HMRC's rules and give you a plain-English summary before anything is filed. Results feed straight into your Self Assessment return.

Frequently asked

Crypto Tax Accountants for UK Investors and Traders: questions directors ask

Do I pay tax if I swap one crypto for another?

Usually yes. A token-to-token swap is a disposal for Capital Gains Tax even if you never convert to pounds.

Is the first £3,000 of crypto gains tax-free?

Yes, the annual exempt amount covers total gains across all assets, currently £3,000 per person.

Does HMRC know about my crypto?
