Making Tax Digital already applies to VAT registered businesses, which means digital records and filing through compatible software. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax then phases in from April 2026 for qualifying income above £50,000, so directors with rental or self-employed income alongside the company need digital records sooner than the company itself does.

Online does not change the statutory position. The accounts still have to comply with the Companies Act and FRS 105 or FRS 102 Section 1A, and the director still signs them. Software shortens the bookkeeping, it does not shift the responsibility.

Anti-money laundering rules mean any UK accountancy firm must verify your identity before acting, which is why an online onboarding still asks for photo identification and proof of address.
