VAT calculator, 2026/27
Enter an amount to see the VAT element and the gross and net figures, plus how far you are from the registration threshold.
The vat calculator runs on the rates and thresholds HMRC has published for the 2026/27 tax year, so the figures you see reflect the position your company is actually filing on rather than a historic set of bands. Change any input and the result recalculates immediately, with no sign-up and nothing sent anywhere.
If you are a director of a UK limited company, use it as a first look before a decision rather than as the decision itself. UK VAT rates as at 2026/27: standard 20%, reduced 5%, zero 0%. Real company positions bring in other income, reliefs, group structures and prior year adjustments that a single page of inputs cannot see, which is why the workings are written out below under vat. Read those, then check the numbers against your own accounts, and speak to us if anything looks materially different from what you expected.

Registration threshold
Registration is compulsory once rolling 12-month taxable turnover passes £90,000.Illustration only, figures are based on the rates you have selected and the information entered. Please check your own position with us before acting.

When you must register
You must register if your taxable turnover in any rolling twelve months exceeds £90,000, or if you expect to exceed it in the next thirty days alone. The test is rolling, not by financial year, which catches out businesses that grow mid-year.
Voluntary registration below the threshold can make sense if you sell mainly to VAT-registered businesses or carry significant input VAT.
Making Tax Digital
All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file returns through MTD-compatible software with a digital link from source data to return. Manual retyping between spreadsheet and portal is not compliant.
E-commerce and marketplace sellers
Marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay are often deemed the supplier for VAT on certain sales, which changes what you declare. Overseas sales, OSS/IOSS registrations and platform fees each need separate treatment, settlement reports rarely map straight onto a VAT return.
What this means for your company
Treat the result as a planning figure for the 2026/27 tax year. If it changes what you were about to do, take a director's salary, a dividend, a large asset purchase or a filing decision, check it against your own accounts first. We can review the position with you and confirm the tax treatment before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a gross figure?
Divide by 1.2 for standard-rated items. The VAT element is the gross amount divided by 6.
What is the VAT registration threshold in 2026/27?
£90,000 of rolling twelve-month taxable turnover. Deregistration is possible when turnover falls below £88,000.
How often do I file VAT returns?
Usually quarterly, with payment due one month and seven days after the quarter end. Monthly and annual accounting schemes are also available.
Can I register for VAT before reaching the threshold?
Yes. Voluntary registration lets you recover VAT on costs and suits businesses selling mainly to VAT-registered customers. It is usually a poor move if your customers are consumers who cannot reclaim the VAT you add.
