Accountants for Freelancers and Creatives

Fixed-fee accounting for freelancers: sole trader or limited company choice, Self Assessment, expenses, VAT, MTD and employment status for UK freelance professionals.

Short answer

Freelancers need simple, reliable accounting: the right structure, records that capture every allowable expense, and tax returns filed on time. We help you choose between sole trader and limited company, set up software, handle Self Assessment or company accounts, and advise on VAT, MTD and employment status.

What this means for your company

Designers, writers, developers, photographers, consultants and other freelancers juggle irregular income and multiple clients. Good accounting turns that into a predictable tax bill, so January and July payments never come as a surprise.

Choosing a structure

Most freelancers start as sole traders because it is simple and cheap to run. A limited company can reduce tax at higher profits by combining a small salary with dividends, and some clients prefer contracting with a company. The comparison depends on profit, pension plans and how much you draw, so we model both.

Employment status

Working mainly for one client, under their control, can make you an employee for tax regardless of your contract. If you work through your own company, IR35 rules may apply. We review contracts and working practices when the pattern of your work suggests a risk.

Managing irregular income

We set a percentage to put aside from each invoice, explain payments on account, and help you claim allowable costs such as equipment, software, home working and travel. Overseas clients raise VAT place-of-supply questions, which we handle as part of the service.

Making Tax Digital

Self-employed freelancers with qualifying income above £50,000 must use MTD for Income Tax from 6 April 2026, with the threshold falling to £30,000 in April 2027. We set up compatible software and submit quarterly updates.

“Accotax have been our accountants for many years now. We maintained them because of their professionalism. In the last couple of years I have been working with Imran, who has been very professional and helpful in guiding us through the whole process, explaining and clarifying every aspect of it. Very prompt in responding to questions and patient with us even when we seem to be slow.”
Mansur Liman · Long-standing company client
“We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we're really glad we did. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing, professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.”
Mael Leboucher · Year end accounts & bookkeeping
“I've been working with Accotax since January 2024, and their support has grown alongside my business needs. My personal allocated manager, Umer, provides tailored services for both of my companies, adapting as I expand and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Frequently asked

Accountants for Freelancers and Creatives: questions directors ask

Do I need an accountant as a freelancer?

Not legally, but most freelancers save more in tax and time than the cost of fixed-fee help, especially once MTD applies.

Should a freelancer be a sole trader or limited company?

It depends on profit and plans. Many switch to a company once profits are well above the higher-rate threshold.

How much tax should I set aside?

A common starting point is 25–30% of profit, adjusted for your income level. We give you a personal figure.

Can I invoice overseas clients without VAT?

Often yes for business clients outside the UK, but the rules depend on the service. We check your invoices.

What records are needed for accountants for freelancers and creatives?

Keep bank statements, sales and platform reports, purchase invoices, payroll records, VAT workings, finance agreements and Companies House correspondence. We confirm the exact list at onboarding and identify gaps before a filing deadline becomes urgent.

How much does help with accountants for freelancers and creatives cost?

The fee depends on transaction volume, record quality, VAT and payroll requirements, historic catch-up and the level of reporting needed. We agree a fixed scope and price before technical work starts, with published packages available on our fees page.

Can you take over accountants for freelancers and creatives from another accountant?

Yes. We request professional clearance, collect the prior records and authorities, check the next Companies House and HMRC deadlines, and give you one clear handover list. The process is normally completed remotely.

Can accountants for freelancers and creatives be handled online?

Yes. We work through secure cloud records, scheduled reviews and digital approvals, while keeping a named team available by phone, video call and email. Clients can also visit our Morden office by appointment.

Which accounting software works best for accountants for freelancers and creatives?

We regularly work with Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, Sage and connected sales or expense apps. The right setup depends on transaction volume, integrations and the reports you need, not simply the software brand.

What tax deadlines matter for accountants for freelancers and creatives?

The relevant calendar may include annual accounts, Corporation Tax payment and return dates, confirmation statements, VAT returns, payroll submissions and Self Assessment. We map the dates from your company year end and registrations.
