Short answer

A trading name is any name a business trades under that differs from its legal name, such as "Bloom Florist" for Smith Floral Ltd. You do not register it at Companies House, but invoices, letters and your website must still show the full registered company name and number.

The rules

A trading name cannot include Ltd, LLP or PLC unless it is the registered name, cannot contain sensitive words without permission, and must not be offensive or pass off another business's name or trade mark.

Sole traders can trade under a name too but must show their own name and a business address on paperwork.

Protecting a trading name

Because trading names are not registered, the only real protection is a UK trade mark with the Intellectual Property Office, or forming a company with that exact name so no one else can register it.

Before you act

Rates, thresholds and deadlines quoted here reflect the 2026/27 UK position and current Companies House and HMRC guidance. Check GOV.UK, or ask us, before relying on them for your own company.
