Start Up Loans and other government funding options

Government-backed funding routes for UK limited companies: Start Up Loans, Innovate UK grants, the British Business Bank programmes, and how each is treated in the accounts and for tax.

Short answer

The government-backed Start Up Loan is a personal loan of £500 to £25,000 per founder at a fixed 6% a year over one to five years, with free mentoring, available to businesses trading under three years. Grants from Innovate UK and local growth hubs are non-repayable but competitive and usually match-funded. Regional growth hubs and the British Business Bank finance hub are the practical places to find what applies to your sector and area.

Start Up Loans

The loan is made to the individual, not the company, so it is a personal liability and is assessed on your personal credit history. Multiple founders in the same business can each apply, up to a total limit for the business.

You submit a business plan and cash flow forecast; the application process is the main effort. Successful applicants get 12 months of free mentoring, which is often as valuable as the money.

If you lend the funds into your company, record it as a director's loan to the company. Interest you charge the company must be reported under the CT61 process if any is paid.

Grants

Innovate UK funds research and development projects through competitions with fixed deadlines and defined scopes. Local growth hubs and combined authorities run smaller capital and skills grants, often match-funded at 30% to 50%.

Grants are taxable income unless specifically exempt, and they interact with R&D claims: notified state aid grants can push a project out of the enhanced SME support into the merged scheme rules. Check before applying, not after.

Other government-backed routes

The British Business Bank does not lend directly but backs the lenders behind many small business loan and equity products, and publishes a finance hub that lists them by stage.

Enterprise Investment Scheme and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme relief is the other government lever, reducing the risk for private investors rather than providing money itself.

What lenders and assessors actually want

Up-to-date bookkeeping, a cash flow forecast with stated assumptions, a clear use of funds and evidence of demand. Filed accounts that are current matter too, because an overdue filing record is visible to every lender.

Prepare the numbers before you start the application. Most rejections at this level are about the quality of the financial information, not the idea.

Frequently asked

Start Up Loans and other government funding options: questions directors ask

How much is a Start Up Loan?

£500 to £25,000 per founder, at a fixed 6% a year over one to five years, with no application fee or early repayment charge.

Is a Start Up Loan a business loan?

It is a personal loan used for business purposes, so the individual is liable even though the company uses the funds.

Are business grants taxable?

Usually yes, as trading income, unless the grant is specifically exempt. Capital grants may instead reduce the qualifying cost for capital allowances.

Does a grant affect an R&D claim?

It can. Notified state aid on a project changes which R&D route applies, so take advice before accepting funding for a project you plan to claim on.

What records are needed for start up loans and other government funding options?

Keep bank statements, sales and platform reports, purchase invoices, payroll records, VAT workings, finance agreements and Companies House correspondence. We confirm the exact list at onboarding and identify gaps before a filing deadline becomes urgent.

How much does help with start up loans and other government funding options cost?

The fee depends on transaction volume, record quality, VAT and payroll requirements, historic catch-up and the level of reporting needed. We agree a fixed scope and price before technical work starts, with published packages available on our fees page.

Can you take over start up loans and other government funding options from another accountant?

Yes. We request professional clearance, collect the prior records and authorities, check the next Companies House and HMRC deadlines, and give you one clear handover list. The process is normally completed remotely.

Can start up loans and other government funding options be handled online?

Yes. We work through secure cloud records, scheduled reviews and digital approvals, while keeping a named team available by phone, video call and email. Clients can also visit our Morden office by appointment.

Which accounting software works best for start up loans and other government funding options?

We regularly work with Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, Sage and connected sales or expense apps. The right setup depends on transaction volume, integrations and the reports you need, not simply the software brand.

What tax deadlines matter for start up loans and other government funding options?

The relevant calendar may include annual accounts, Corporation Tax payment and return dates, confirmation statements, VAT returns, payroll submissions and Self Assessment. We map the dates from your company year end and registrations.
