HMRC enquiry service
Someone to handle the HMRC enquiry for you
We deal with HMRC compliance checks, VAT and corporation tax enquiries, R&D and CIS checks, IR35 reviews, disclosures and penalty appeals for UK limited companies. The first conversation is free. After that you get a fixed quote in writing for an agreed scope, so you always know what the work costs before it starts.
What we charge
Quote on request. We do not publish a price list for enquiry work, because the same letter can mean two hours or two months depending on the tax, the years involved and the state of the records. Publishing a headline figure would only be misleading.
Free first review
We read the letter, explain it and tell you what we would do. No charge, no obligation.
Fixed quote per stage
An agreed scope and price in writing before work starts, so the fee does not drift with the enquiry.
Ongoing support
If you want us to take on the accounts and tax afterwards, that is a separate monthly package you choose freely.

How we run an HMRC enquiry
1. Letter review
We read the letter, identify the tax, the period and the power HMRC is using, and tell you what is genuinely being asked. You get our read of it in plain English, with the real deadline.
2. Scope and quote
Before any chargeable work starts you get a written scope and a fixed quote for that scope. If the enquiry widens later, we quote again rather than letting fees drift.
3. Evidence and reply
We reconcile the filed position to the underlying records, test whether the information request is within HMRC's powers, and prepare an indexed reply that answers the questions actually asked.
4. Negotiation and behaviour
Where something is wrong, we deal with it properly: the correct figure, the right number of years and a behaviour argument that matters, because behaviour drives the penalty range.
5. Closure and payment
We push for a closure notice or a clear written conclusion, check any assessment before you pay it, advise on appeal rights and agree a time to pay arrangement where it is needed.
What the fee covers
- All correspondence with the HMRC officer in your name
- Attending or handling any meeting HMRC asks for
- Testing information notices before you comply with them
- Disclosure reports where an error has to be corrected
- Penalty mitigation arguments and appeals where appropriate
- A named contact who knows your file, not a call centre
HMRC enquiry service questions
How much does it cost to deal with an HMRC enquiry?
It depends entirely on the tax, the number of years and how complete your records are. We do not publish a fixed price for enquiry work because a one-point aspect check and a multi-year disclosure are not the same job. You get a written fixed quote for an agreed scope before any chargeable work starts.
Do you charge for the first conversation?
No. The first call, and our read of the letter, are free and without obligation. You will know what the letter means and what we would do before you decide anything.
Do you take on companies that are not existing clients?
Yes. Most HMRC enquiry work comes from directors who already have an accountant, or who had one. We can act on the enquiry only and leave your existing arrangements alone.
Can you take over an enquiry that has already started badly?
Yes. It is common. We read what has already been sent to HMRC, work out the current position and take it forward from there.
Is fee protection insurance worth it?
It covers professional fees for defending an enquiry rather than the tax itself. Whether it is worth it depends on your risk profile and how you prefer to budget. We explain it honestly rather than selling it.
What if the reply deadline is very close?
Call or WhatsApp us rather than emailing. A short holding letter to HMRC, asking for a reasonable extension and explaining why, is often better than a rushed substantive reply.
