Choosing the route
Dividends require sufficient distributable reserves and board paperwork, and carry no UK withholding tax, though your home country will usually tax them with credit for any UK tax paid. Salary or fees for UK duties go through PAYE and are taxed as earnings.
Repaying a director's loan that you genuinely made to the company earlier is simply moving your own money back and is not itself taxable, but the loan needs to have been properly recorded from the outset for this to work cleanly.
