Should I register for VAT voluntarily?

Voluntary registration helps if your customers are VAT registered and you have input VAT to reclaim. It hurts if you sell to consumers. How to decide.

What this means for your company

Register voluntarily if your customers are VAT registered businesses, because they reclaim the VAT you charge and you recover VAT on your costs. Avoid it if you sell mainly to consumers, because adding 20% either cuts your margin or raises your prices.

Short answer

Register voluntarily if your customers are VAT registered businesses, because they reclaim the VAT you charge and you recover VAT on your costs. Avoid it if you sell mainly to consumers, because adding 20% either cuts your margin or raises your prices.

When it pays

B2B service companies, agencies, consultancies and software businesses usually gain. Customers are indifferent to the VAT and you recover input tax on software, equipment, professional fees and subcontractors. Startups with heavy setup costs can reclaim before trading properly begins.

There is a presentational argument too. A VAT number signals scale, and some procurement processes expect one. It is a weak reason on its own but a real one in enterprise sales.

When it costs

If you sell to the public, tradespeople, private landlords or exempt organisations, your customers cannot reclaim, so you either absorb 20% or become 20% more expensive than an unregistered competitor.

Add the admin: quarterly returns under Making Tax Digital, compatible software, correct invoicing and the penalty points regime. That is manageable, but it is a real ongoing cost for a small business with modest input tax.

Rates, thresholds and deadlines quoted here reflect the 2026/27 UK position and current Companies House and HMRC guidance. Check GOV.UK, or ask us, before relying on them for your own company.
