Start with clean records

Reconcile every bank account to the closing statement at the year end, chase anything unmatched, and make sure the last VAT return ties into the ledger.

Then check the balance sheet accounts that most often hide errors: the directors loan account, VAT control, PAYE control, and any suspense account.

Year-end adjustments

Accrue costs incurred but not invoiced, prepay costs paid in advance such as insurance, recognise revenue earned but not billed, and write off bad debts you know will not arrive.

Add depreciation on fixed assets and reconcile the fixed asset register to the ledger. Under FRS 105 there is no deferred tax and no revaluation.

Finish and file

Prepare the corporation tax computation, apply capital allowances, and post the tax charge. Then produce the accounts, get them approved by the board, and file: accounts to Companies House within nine months of the accounting reference date, and the CT600 with detailed accounts to HMRC within twelve months.

Thresholds, rates and deadlines quoted here reflect the 2026/27 UK position. Check current GOV.UK guidance, or ask us, before you rely on them for your own company.
