What this means for your company

A limited company is a separate legal person, and its money is not yours. Running company income through a personal account creates a directors loan account tangle and makes accounts far more expensive to prepare.

It is not optional in practice

A limited company is a separate legal person, and its money is not yours. Running company income through a personal account creates a directors loan account tangle and makes accounts far more expensive to prepare.

Open the account as soon as the company is incorporated, before the first invoice goes out.

What to look for

A working bank feed into your bookkeeping software, sensible charges for the number of transactions you make, and the ability to add a second signatory if you have a co-director.

If you handle cash or take card payments, check how quickly settlements arrive and whether the feed shows gross takings or net of fees.

Keeping it clean

Pay yourself by scheduled salary and documented dividends rather than ad hoc transfers. Reconcile monthly rather than annually, and keep personal spending out of the account entirely.

Thresholds, rates and deadlines quoted here reflect the 2026/27 UK position. Check current GOV.UK guidance, or ask us, before you rely on them for your own company.

Frequently asked

Limited company bank accounts: questions directors ask

Can I use my personal account at the start?

It is a bad idea and will cost more at the year end. If it has happened, tell your accountant early so it can be untangled.

Do we need a separate tax savings account?

Not required, but setting aside VAT and corporation tax as it accrues is the single most effective cash discipline for a small company.

What records are needed for limited company bank accounts?

Keep bank statements, sales and platform reports, purchase invoices, payroll records, VAT workings, finance agreements and Companies House correspondence. We confirm the exact list at onboarding and identify gaps before a filing deadline becomes urgent.

How much does help with limited company bank accounts cost?

The fee depends on transaction volume, record quality, VAT and payroll requirements, historic catch-up and the level of reporting needed. We agree a fixed scope and price before technical work starts, with published packages available on our fees page.

Can you take over limited company bank accounts from another accountant?

Yes. We request professional clearance, collect the prior records and authorities, check the next Companies House and HMRC deadlines, and give you one clear handover list. The process is normally completed remotely.

Can limited company bank accounts be handled online?

Yes. We work through secure cloud records, scheduled reviews and digital approvals, while keeping a named team available by phone, video call and email. Clients can also visit our Morden office by appointment.

Which accounting software works best for limited company bank accounts?

We regularly work with Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, Sage and connected sales or expense apps. The right setup depends on transaction volume, integrations and the reports you need, not simply the software brand.

What tax deadlines matter for limited company bank accounts?

The relevant calendar may include annual accounts, Corporation Tax payment and return dates, confirmation statements, VAT returns, payroll submissions and Self Assessment. We map the dates from your company year end and registrations.

Is this limited company bank accounts guidance personal tax advice?

No. This page explains general UK rules and common accounting treatment. Your facts, contracts and wider tax position must be reviewed before you rely on a conclusion.
