The confirmation statement confirms company information such as officers, shareholders and PSCs, and is due annually within fourteen days of the review period ending. Accounts report financial performance and are due nine months after the accounting reference date.
The confirmation statement date runs from incorporation or the last statement. The accounts date runs from the accounting reference date. They rarely coincide, which is why directors who assume one filing covers the year end up late on the other.
The corporation tax return adds a third date, twelve months after the period end, with payment due nine months and one day after it. Four dates in total for a typical trading company.
Late accounts trigger automatic penalties of £150 to £1,500, doubled for a repeat year. A missed confirmation statement carries no automatic financial penalty but leads to strike off action and is an offence for the directors.
