What we file
An eBay seller accountant reconciles managed payments into sales, final value fees, promoted listings and refunds, establishes whether your activity is trading, and files the Self Assessment or company returns that follow.
eBay settles net of final value fees, promoted listing fees, regulatory operating fees and refunds. The gross figure is in the reports rather than the bank. We post the full breakdown so your margin calculation includes the promotion spend that often decides whether a listing was worth running.
Selling personal possessions is not usually trading. Buying to resell, making to sell, or selling at scale and frequency generally is. HMRC receives data from online platforms, so the practical question is whether your position stands up if it is asked about. We assess it against the badges of trade and document the conclusion.
For sole traders, the Self Assessment return with a properly prepared set of accounts behind it. For companies, statutory accounts to Companies House, the CT600 to HMRC, VAT returns where registered and payroll where you take a salary.
Rates, thresholds and deadlines quoted here reflect the current UK position and current HMRC and Companies House guidance. Check GOV.UK, or ask us, before relying on them for your own business.

“I've been working with Accotax since January 2024, and their support has grown alongside my business needs. My personal allocated manager, Umer, provides tailored services for both of my companies, adapting as I expand and ensuring everything runs smoothly. They are responsive, knowledgeable, and always clear in their communication. Their help with accounts, VAT, payrolls, pensions and compliance gives me real confidence and peace of mind.”
“We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we're really glad we did. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing, professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.”
“Accotax have been our accountants for many years now. We maintained them because of their professionalism. In the last couple of years I have been working with Imran, who has been very professional and helpful in guiding us through the whole process, explaining and clarifying every aspect of it. Very prompt in responding to questions and patient with us even when we seem to be slow.”

Often once profit is consistently over roughly £30,000, but it depends on how much you draw. We model both.
Start with gross orders and reconcile through refunds, marketplace taxes, selling fees, advertising, fulfilment charges, reserves and currency differences to the net bank deposit. The settlement report, not the bank receipt alone, is the accounting source.
Selling, payment, fulfilment and advertising fees should be separated so contribution margin is visible by channel. This helps distinguish high revenue from profitable revenue and supports better pricing, stock and advertising decisions.
Keep bank statements, sales and platform reports, purchase invoices, payroll records, VAT workings, finance agreements and Companies House correspondence. We confirm the exact list at onboarding and identify gaps before a filing deadline becomes urgent.
The fee depends on transaction volume, record quality, VAT and payroll requirements, historic catch-up and the level of reporting needed. We agree a fixed scope and price before technical work starts, with published packages available on our fees page.
