Salary vs dividends for limited company directors in 2026/27

Quick answer

For most UK limited company directors in 2026/27, an efficient mix is still a modest PAYE salary plus dividends from post-tax profits when distributable profits allow. From 6 April 2026, dividend ordinary and higher rates rise, so extraction planning matters more. What changed for salary and dividends in 2026/27?

From 6 April 2026, the dividend ordinary rate is 10.75%, up from 8.75%, and the higher rate is 35.75%, up from 33.75%. The additional rate remains 39.35%. The dividend allowance remains £500; dividends covered by it still use tax bands, so it is not an extra band of untaxed income.

Corporation Tax applies before profits are paid as dividends: the small profits rate is 19%, the main rate is 25%, and marginal relief can apply between the relevant limits. The usual £50,000 and £250,000 limits are reduced for associated companies and short accounting periods. Salary and qualifying employer costs are generally deductible before Corporation Tax; dividends are not.

How do limited company directors usually take their pay?

There is no universal magic salary. A common approach is a modest PAYE salary considered against the personal allowance and National Insurance thresholds, followed by dividends from available distributable profits. Your other income, company profits, pension plans and eligibility for Employment Allowance can change the best mix.

Salary is employment income subject to PAYE and can attract employee and employer National Insurance. Dividends do not attract National Insurance, but they come from profits left after Corporation Tax and can attract personal dividend tax. Compare the company’s total cost and your net income together, not just the headline dividend rate.

What paperwork do I need, and when is a dividend unlawful?

Pay dividends only from sufficient distributable profits supported by appropriate accounts. Cash in the bank alone does not prove that a dividend is lawful. Keep board minutes and dividend vouchers and follow the rights attached to each share class.

Do not treat the company as a personal bank account. Money drawn without a valid salary, dividend, expense repayment or other proper basis can create an overdrawn director’s loan. Section 455 tax is 35.75% for relevant loans made on or after 6 April 2026, compared with 33.75% for loans made from 6 April 2022 to 5 April 2026, if they remain outstanding nine months and one day after the accounting period ends.

Section 455 is a company tax charge, separate from possible benefit-in-kind consequences for the director. Repayment, release or write-off can have different tax effects, and anti-avoidance rules can apply to temporary repayments and re-borrowing. Take advice before moving money simply to clear a year-end balance.

Frequently asked

Salary vs dividends for limited company directors in 2026/27: questions directors ask

Do dividends still beat salary after the 2026 rate rise?

Often a mixture still works, but model both using your company profits, other income and National Insurance position. Dividends are paid from post-tax distributable profits, so the personal rate alone does not determine the best option.

Does the £500 dividend allowance still apply in 2026/27?

Yes. The dividend allowance remains £500. Dividends within the allowance still count towards your tax bands.

Is this personal tax or financial advice?

No. It is general guidance only. Obtain advice based on your own company and personal circumstances before choosing a pay strategy.

What records are needed for salary and dividends?

Keep bank statements, sales and platform reports, purchase invoices, payroll records, VAT workings, finance agreements and Companies House correspondence. We confirm the exact list at onboarding and identify gaps before a filing deadline becomes urgent.

How much does help with salary and dividends cost?

The fee depends on transaction volume, record quality, VAT and payroll requirements, historic catch-up and the level of reporting needed. We agree a fixed scope and price before technical work starts, with published packages available on our fees page.

Can you take over salary and dividends from another accountant?

Yes. We request professional clearance, collect the prior records and authorities, check the next Companies House and HMRC deadlines, and give you one clear handover list. The process is normally completed remotely.

Can salary and dividends be handled online?

Yes. We work through secure cloud records, scheduled reviews and digital approvals, while keeping a named team available by phone, video call and email. Clients can also visit our Morden office by appointment.

Which accounting software works best for salary and dividends?

We regularly work with Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, Sage and connected sales or expense apps. The right setup depends on transaction volume, integrations and the reports you need, not simply the software brand.

What tax deadlines matter for salary and dividends?

The relevant calendar may include annual accounts, Corporation Tax payment and return dates, confirmation statements, VAT returns, payroll submissions and Self Assessment. We map the dates from your company year end and registrations.

Is this salary and dividends guidance personal tax advice?

No. This page explains general UK rules and common accounting treatment. Your facts, contracts and wider tax position must be reviewed before you rely on a conclusion.
