Short answer

A limited company accountant prepares the statutory accounts filed at Companies House, the CT600 Corporation Tax return filed with HMRC, and the confirmation statement. Most also run payroll, VAT returns and bookkeeping, file directors' Self Assessment returns, and advise on salary, dividends and director's loans.

The annual compliance cycle

Every UK limited company must file statutory accounts at Companies House, normally within nine months of its year end, and a Company Tax Return (CT600) with HMRC within twelve months. Corporation Tax itself is usually payable nine months and one day after the year end, before the return is due.

A confirmation statement must also be filed at least once every twelve months, confirming the company's officers, shareholders and people with significant control.

Ongoing work beyond year end

Depending on the company, an accountant also runs PAYE payroll and RTI submissions, files VAT returns under Making Tax Digital, keeps the books in Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent, and prepares each director's Self Assessment return.

Advice is where the value sits: setting a tax-efficient mix of salary and dividends, keeping the director's loan account in credit, and planning for Corporation Tax payments.
