Subscription revenue is recognised as the service is delivered, so annual plans billed up front create deferred income on the balance sheet. Booking the cash as revenue overstates profit, inflates the corporation tax charge and produces metrics that fall apart in due diligence.
Investors compare your reported ARR to the deferred revenue balance and the cash collected. When those three tie together your numbers are credible; when they do not, every other figure gets questioned.
