CPA and UK accountants

Can a US CPA prepare and file UK company accounts?

No. A US CPA is not licensed for UK statutory filings, and UK GAAP, Companies House and HMRC filing formats differ from US requirements.

Short answer

No, not to statutory UK standard. A US CPA licence gives no authority to file UK company accounts at Companies House or corporation tax returns with HMRC, and US GAAP training does not cover UK reporting formats. You need a UK-based, UK-qualified accountant for these filings.

Where a US CPA still has a role

Why the qualifications do not transfer

UK statutory accounts follow the Companies Act 2006 and either UK GAAP (FRS 102/105) or IFRS, filed to Companies House in iXBRL format, while corporation tax computations follow UK tax law submitted through HMRC's CT600 system. A CPA's training is built around US GAAP and IRS rules, which are structured differently.

There is no reciprocal recognition between the AICPA and UK bodies that would let a CPA sign UK statutory accounts or act as a UK company's registered tax agent without separately qualifying or working through a UK-regulated firm.

Where a US CPA still has a role

If you are a US person owning a UK company, your CPA remains essential for your US tax return, including reporting the UK company's activity to the IRS under rules such as GILTI, Subpart F or Form 5471, which a UK accountant will not handle.

The practical setup for most overseas owners is a UK accountant for the UK company's accounts, corporation tax and payroll, and a US CPA for the personal and US-side tax reporting, with the two firms exchanging figures rather than either doing both jobs.

What this costs with us

Our fixed monthly packages for a UK limited company start at £89 plus VAT and run to £169 and £289 plus VAT as bookkeeping, VAT, payroll and reporting are added. One-off filings are sold at fixed prices, and the Companies House fees we pay for you are charged at cost with no VAT added. Overseas owners are quoted on exactly the same published prices as UK-resident clients.
