A UK company can pay someone abroad, but the tax question is where the work is physically done. An employee working overseas can create a local payroll obligation, social security liability and, if they are senior or sign contracts, a permanent establishment that drags part of your profit into another country's tax net. Short trips rarely matter; someone living and working abroad for months usually does.

Calling a team member a contractor does not settle their status. HMRC looks at control, substitution and mutuality of obligation, and the off-payroll rules put the status decision on medium and large clients. Overseas contractors sit outside PAYE, but the same substance test applies locally, and getting it wrong is normally discovered years later with interest attached.

Employer of record providers solve the entity problem quickly and cost more per head than a local payroll. They are a sensible bridge for one or two hires in a country, and an expensive habit once you have five.
