Short answer

An accountant for a limited company prepares the statutory accounts, calculates and files the Corporation Tax return, keeps Companies House filings current and explains the director's own tax position. Everything runs to one agreed calendar and one fixed monthly fee.

What the company itself must file

A private company files annual accounts with Companies House, normally nine months after the year end, a confirmation statement each year, and a Company Tax Return with HMRC twelve months after the accounting period ends. Corporation Tax itself is usually payable nine months and one day after the period end, so the payment date arrives before the return deadline.

The first accounting period often runs longer than twelve months, which splits into two Corporation Tax periods. We check that split at the start rather than discovering it at the year end.

What the director must handle personally

Salary through PAYE, dividends, benefits in kind and any director's loan account movements all affect the director's own tax return. Company money spent personally is not simply drawings, and an overdrawn loan account can create an additional Corporation Tax charge that many owners only discover after the year end.

How we work through the year

Bookkeeping or record review, quarterly checks where VAT applies, payroll each month if the company employs, then the year-end accounts, computation and filings. You approve the accounts before anything is submitted and we explain the tax due and the payment dates in plain terms.

Small limited companies are welcome

Single-director companies, contractors, consultants and young trading companies are a large part of our work. A smaller company still needs correct accounts, a Corporation Tax return and a clean split between business and personal money, and it usually needs less of our time, which is reflected in the fee.

What Our Clients Say

Rated 4.9 out of 5From 302 Google reviews
We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we're really glad we did. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing, professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.
Mael Leboucher · Year end accounts & bookkeeping
I've been working with Accotax since January 2024, and their support has grown alongside my business needs. My personal allocated manager, Umer, provides tailored services for both of my companies, adapting as I expand and ensuring everything runs smoothly. They are responsive, knowledgeable, and always clear in their communication. Their help with accounts, VAT, payrolls, pensions and compliance gives me real confidence and peace of mind.
Зайтуна «Анонимная татарка» Manning · Two limited companies, VAT, payroll & pensions
Accotax have been our accountants for many years now. We maintained them because of their professionalism. In the last couple of years I have been working with Imran, who has been very professional and helpful in guiding us through the whole process, explaining and clarifying every aspect of it. Very prompt in responding to questions and patient with us even when we seem to be slow.

Frequently asked

Accountant for a limited company: questions directors ask

Does a limited company have to use an accountant?

No, there is no legal requirement for most private companies, but the directors remain personally responsible for accurate accounts, returns and records filed on time.

What does an accountant for a limited company cost?

Our packages start from £89 plus VAT a month. Price depends on turnover, transaction volume, VAT, payroll and whether bookkeeping is included.

Can you file both Companies House accounts and the CT600?

Yes. We prepare one set of accounts, file the statutory version with Companies House and submit the accounts, computation and CT600 to HMRC.

What happens if my accounts are late?

Companies House issues automatic penalties that escalate with delay and double for a second consecutive late year. HMRC charges separate penalties for a late Company Tax Return.

Can you deal with my director Self Assessment too?

Yes. Director tax returns are included in our higher packages and can be added to any other package.

Do I need an accountant for a dormant company?

Dormant companies still need dormant accounts and a confirmation statement. That is a much smaller job and priced accordingly.

Can you take over from my current accountant?

Yes. We request professional clearance, collect the accounting and tax records, review every approaching deadline and manage the handover so no filing is missed.

Can everything be handled online?

Yes. Records, questions, approvals and meetings can all be handled securely online. Clients near London can also meet us at 12 London Road, Morden by appointment.

Is basic tax advice included?

Routine day-to-day questions are included. Technical calculations, written advice, planning projects, HMRC disputes and specialist claims are scoped and agreed before any work starts.

How quickly can I get a fixed fee quote?

Use the short online quote form with your turnover, VAT, payroll and bookkeeping position. We can normally confirm scope and a fixed monthly fee the same working day.
